Covid -19, Face Mask and Hearing Loss

Covid -19 pandemic changed our lives in different ways. We are practicing physical distancing, washing our hands more frequently and using the face mask in public areas.

Our hearing system is not as good as many other animals for instance by the time dogs’ sense of hearing has developed, they can already hear 4 times the distance of a human with normal hearing. Dogs can hear higher pitched sounds and can detect a frequency range of 67-45,000 Hz, compared to a human range of 64-23,000 Hz and cats can hear much higher-pitched sounds, up to 64 kHz, which is 1.6 octaves above the range of a human, and even 1 octave above the range of a dog.

As a result a person with normal hearing needs some clues to hear more appropriately; such as the body posture of the speaker and the lip reading.

People with hearing loss are relying on these information more than those with normal hearing.

Unfortunately these days physical distancing and face mask have negative impact on our hearing because the distance can reduce the energy of the sound dramatically and the face mask can eliminate the information that we can receive from the lip reading; consequently people with hearing loss may have more problem to hear clearly.

As always we are here to help you to hear better. The new hearing aid technology can make hearing much easier.
Please give us a call to make an appointment for a hearing test and consultation in one of our beautiful clinics at North Vancouver or downtown Vancouver.

Hope to see you soon

Hearing Aids and Social Distancing

Hearing well is even more important during the era of Social Distancing. Anyone with a hearing loss needs their hearing aids to work well in order to communicate with loved ones in person or digitally.

The World Health Organization recommends that we stay connected with each other while in isolation via telephone, email, social media or video calls.

1. Staying at Home can mean a sense of isolation from the lack of face To face communication. A way to overcome this is by telecontacting friends and family over the phone or by making video calls on social media.

For phone calls and video chatting, newer hearing aids such as Phonak Marvel hearing aids enables true Hands free streaming for any Bluetooth enabled phones even audible phone notifications can be set to hear through the hearing aids. Streaming means that the audio is sent directly to your hearing aids and blocks out any background noise.

Reach out to our clinic and we will gladly provide you some easy to follow instructions on “HowTo” connect to your hearing aids!

While practicing social distancing, it may become harder to hear loved ones during conversation. With distance, background noise can be more prevalent. With distance, surrounding environmental noises can be overcome if wireless microphone systems are used.

Using a remote microphone, such as a Phonak Roger Microphone in these situations can be a huge help. They send the speaker’s voice directly into your hearing aids to help the user hear better in noisy situations.

Watching television with loved ones or by yourself can also be a challenge, particularly when there is background noise in the room. There are hearing aid accessories that have been developed to help with overcoming this issue, so that you can truly enjoy watching your favorite shows again. Phonak has an array of different accessories such as the Phonak TV connector that can help you to hear in the most difficult listening situations in your home.
